Childhood Memories and Today’s Thoughts

Think of someone who has passed away, whether you knew them or not, who you would most like to be able to spend the day with. Who is that person?

I would love to spend the day with my great grandmother. Although I have never met her, I have heard snippets of information about her. She sounds like she was a hard working, intelligent and caring lady. I would love to sit down and chat with her. I would love to ask her questions about her day to day life. About how particular people fit into her circle. How she felt about various people and incidents. I would love to give her a big hug, and to feel what I imagine to be strong, yet gentle arms around me.

Who is that person for you?

Do you have a favourite Disney Princess?

In the older movies, and stories that have been around for generations, the Princess would always be rescued by a Prince. They would instantly fall in love. They would be married, and live happily ever after.

In more recent interpretations, the Princess saves the day herself. She does not rely on her Prince for her happy outcome. The Princess and the Prince are 2 independent people who do not need the other to complete themselves, or to save them from an untimely demise. They do however come to rely and depend on each other.

I love a good Disney movie, but, having daughters, I much prefer the newer style, where both sexes are equally smart, brave and endearing.

Which was your favourite growing up? Has this changed over time?

Which was your favourite book, as a child? I’m told that as a toddler, I loved a book called “Betty Bear’s Birthday”, about a young bear, who thought all of her friend’s had forgotten her birthday, only to discover they had thrown her a surprise birthday party!

In primary school, I found I loved reading mystery novels, as well as classics such as Heidi, and Anne of Green Gables. The latter genre was not popular at the time, but I was enticed back to re-read these novels over and over.

Do your children enjoy the same books you did? What are their favourites?
